Gas offers significant benefits as an alternative to diesel, it has a key part to play in a multiple fuel Transport Strategy

The UK currently has more than 700 commercial vehicles on CNG (compressed natural gas) or LNG (liquefied natural gas).

The results from Leyland, a compressed gas filling station in Lancashire which has been providing renewable Biomethane for HGVs for nearly two years now, show that using such fuels can cut emissions by 84%; there is a solution in a sector that has always been viewed as notoriously difficult to decarbonise.

Whilst there are concerns regarding whether the UK’s existing electricity infrastructure will be able to handle the greater demand from electric vehicles (an area on which current government policy is focused), gas powered vehicles offer an alternative solution that utilises existing infrastructure-the gas grid- to decarbonise transport. Any improvements that can be made in transport need taking very seriously. Switching heavy duty vehicles to run on gas has big benefits and the gas vehicle industry is poised to expand rapidly as barriers to growth are removed.

Harnessing the potential of gas-powered vehicles will require a joined up strategy and investment in infrastructure. We recognise that decarbonising transport is complex and will take time. For road haulage and heavy vehicles, the best solution is, clearly, gas vehicles. The technology is ready, the UK has an extensive and world class gas infrastructure and it is simply the most appropriate solution for this sector. Now government must seize the opportunity. After all, ditching polluting petrol and dirty diesel vehicles, and replacing them with ones that run on green gas would lead to a cleaner future and improve health outcomes.
